Moen is sounding the alarm after independent lab testing revealed that many cheap, off-brand, foreign-made faucets could be poisoning Americans with high levels of lead and other harmful substances.
Commissioned by Moen and conducted by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), the testing showed that 90% of these faucets failed to meet American safe drinking water standards. Between 2020 and 2024, an estimated 35 million of these suspect products entered the U.S., putting millions of households at risk.
“In recent years, off-brand, foreign-made faucets have entered the American market with prices so low that we were skeptical that the products were safe for use, and we were right,” says Aaron Bores, EVP of Product Development at Fortune Brands Innovations. “The third-party testing results were more egregious than we had expected. Nearly all the tested products failed one or more American safe drinking water testing standards, and several had levels of lead and chemicals that far exceeded our American safety standards. These cheap off-brand products aren’t just pushing the limits of our safety standards — they are obliterating them, and the consumer is paying the price.”
Several tested faucets showed chemical levels up to 591% over safety limits. In response, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued nine product warnings on May 14, urging consumers to stop using the flagged models immediately.
“People are buying off-brand, foreign-made faucets because they are cheap, but the team behind Moen wants them to know that cutting costs on a faucet isn’t worth the health risks,” Bores adds.
Unlike the off-brand imports, Moen faucets undergo rigorous testing and come with a lifetime limited warranty. The brand has been named America’s Most Trusted Faucet Brand by Lifestory for 10 years straight.
While recent headlines regarding tariffs and supply chain issues have sparked interest in products that are “Made in USA,” it is important to note that Moen manufacturers products in the U.S. and China.

Moen faucets are officially Rock Father-approved. A number of the faucets here at Rock Father HQ are Moen, and I’ve used their products in bathroom remodels in our last two homes. When the time comes to switch out a few other existing faucets, they’ll be Moen.
