Canadian genre-benders Sumo Cyco unleashed their new single, “Asteroid,” today, accompanied by the official music video, which premiered on Ghost Cult Magazine. The track kicks off their fourth studio album, NEON VOID, arriving Oct. 24.
“It’s about impact and anger,” said lead singer Skye Sweetnam. “The world is so interconnected, and we all have heard of the butterfly effect. I feel there’s a growing tension when the actions one person takes affect everyone in profound ways. Thoughts can spread like viruses. Technology can change the world. We glorify inflicting maximum change, but in the wrong hands, it can be exploitative of power. Whether that’s the ‘Move Fast and Break Things’ mentality or charging into AI tech before anyone can reconcile with the consequences. It makes me mad that we can be so reckless in pursuit of glory and ego. I feel like a flaming ball of rock & metal that wants to hurl myself into the abyss! The world has been through worse disasters, and it will survive. The question is, will we?”
Written during a period of personal and global unrest, NEON VOID may be Sumo Cyco’s most deliberate work yet.
