A lot of people here in the U.S. don’t realize it, but the NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! series of compilations began overseas in the early 1980s and didn’t surface here until 1998 with Volume 1 of the U.S. editions. It’s actually one of my “I feel old” moments, but I was actually peddling music for much of the time between ’98-2004, and personally set displays for many NOW! titles up to Volume 16. Tonight comes news that NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! Volume 53 is on the way, alongside a new title, NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL MOVIES! Both will be available as physical CDs and digital downloads on February 3, 2015 as part of a joint venture between Universal and Sony. For those that are curious, the original NOW! series in Europe is up to 90 main releases, with another hundred or so spin-off collections. In the U.S., there’s been an equally-large number of spin-offs covering everything from Disney to Slow Jams.
